-Edge Computing Panel PC and Embedded Industrial PC
Client Profile
Company: BalticWindTech S.A.
Industry: Offshore Wind Power
Location: Gdańsk, Poland
Project: SCADA & Remote Monitoring System for Offshore Substation
Deployment: 2024 Q4
Application Site: Baltic Power Offshore Wind Farm Platform
Project Background
Offshore wind farms in the Baltic Sea demand high-reliability control and monitoring systems that can operate continuously in extreme environmental conditions. BalticWindTech S.A. was selected to implement a marine-hardened SCADA and sensor data acquisition platform for an offshore substation.
The system needed:
- Reliable Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI) for operator interaction
- Powerful edge computers for real-time data processing
- Industrial-grade components that could withstand humidity, salt spray, vibration, and temperature variation
The CESIPC Hardware Solution
BalticWindTech deployed a dual-device solution combining KLD-1061CA Panel PCs and EPC-309A Industrial Box PCs from CESIPC.
1. KLD-1061CA – Marine-grade Panel PC for Operator Interface
Key Features:
- IP69K stainless steel chassis – resistant to corrosion, high-pressure water jets, and marine environments
- Intel® processor architecture – ensures real-time SCADA responsiveness
- Fanless, sealed design – supports stable 24/7 operation in high-humidity conditions
- Touchscreen panel – operable with gloves and unaffected by seawater spray
- Industrial I/O ports – LAN, USB, COM ports
Installed on control panels inside the offshore platform’s electrical room, KLD-1061CA provided a graphical HMI for technicians to monitor transformers, breakers, and alarms in real time.
2. EPC-309A – Fanless Industrial PC for Data Acquisition and Edge Computing
Key Features:
- Intel® 10th Gen CPU – strong performance for sensor fusion and protocol conversion
- 6x Serial Ports (RS-232/485) – ideal for legacy sensor and controller integration
- 6x USB + 2x LAN ports – supports camera modules, IoT gateways, and PLC communication
- Fanless design – no moving parts, ideal for long-term marine deployments
- Compact metal housing – mounted inside sealed cabinets under harsh vibration and temperature
EPC-309A served as the data concentrator, collecting inputs from environmental sensors (wind speed, vibration, temperature) and performing pre-processing before sending to cloud servers. It also handled real-time alarms and logging.
System Architecture Integration
| Component | Function | Location |
|---|---|---|
| KLD-1061CA | Operator interface (SCADA HMI) | Electrical Room, Offshore Platform |
| EPC-309A | Sensor data acquisition & edge processing | Equipment Cabinet, Base Deck |
The two systems were connected via industrial Ethernet and synchronized through the SCADA platform. EPC-309A acted as the front-end data processor, while KLD-1061CA displayed real-time status and control options to field technicians.
Results and Client Feedback
After deployment and stress testing:
- ✅ Zero downtime after 6 months at sea
- ✅ Real-time monitoring enabled fast response to grid fluctuations
- ✅ Reduced maintenance through edge analytics
- ✅ Smooth system communication between EPC-309A and KLD-1061CA
